Ask a question

I love natural dyeing so much I decided to make a kit as an easy way to get started with this traditional art. The colors from plant material are so beautiful and sometimes unexpected.

Dye a silk scarf with dried dahlia flowers.

This kit includes
• washed 8 x 54" habotai silk scarf
• locally grown dried flowers (no pesticides)
• alum mordant
• baking soda
• 5 clothespins
• 2 wooden popsicle sticks
• 2 rubber bands
• and detailed instructions on how to mordant fabric, fold and clamp it to make a resist design, and dye the scarf in a dye bath made with dried flowers.

The kit shows you how to make 1 of 3 possible patterns: zig zag, circle or dots (from clothespins.) These are shown in the photos above. You can also dye the scarf a solid color if you prefer.

You need to provide
• a stainless steel or aluminum cooking pot
• a stainless steel stirring spoon
• a drying line

Important!
All equipment used for natural dyeing must not be reused for cooking! Thrift stores are great places to find these items inexpensively. Children must be supervised.

The colors in the second photo shows the possible range of colors you may get. Each dye bath is different as the pH of your water can dramatically effect the color. Dahlia flowers usually give a soft yellow and when modified with baking soda, a light gold.

Experience the alchemy of nature!
